Overview

This project aims to provide six Non-Stress Test (NST) machines to Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of KEM Hospital, Mumbai. This department has been managing 6000-7000 deliveries per year, 50% of which are high risk cases. Nearly half of these are cases transferred from other Municipal General Hospitals, primary health centres, first referral units, other medical colleges and private nursing homes. Many of these cases require fetal heart rate monitoring and the hospital does not have any working NST machines (which are used for monitoring fetal heart rate) as of now. NST machines helps in continuous fetal monitoring and early detection of abnormal variation of fetal heart rate and early intervention for a better outcome. NST machines also find use in the treatment of high risk antenatal cases like chronic hypertension preeclampsia and diabetes mellitus, oligohydramnios.

Currently, at the KEM hospital, the NST machines in the labor room and antenatal wards are not in working condition and cannot be repaired. Therefore, there is a requirement of six NST machines for immediate use at the KEM hospital.

Highlights

The IIFL Foundation has donated 6 NST machines to the hospital to test fetal wellbeing before the onset of labor. This will support in conducting prenatal non-stress test functions in overall antepartum surveillance with ultrasound as a part or component of the biophysical profile.
