OVERVIEW

Air pollution is a very serious issue we face currently and it poses a significant threat to public health. One of the major contributing factors of air pollution is growing vehicular emissions from the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICES). The Dabbawalas’ of Mumbai is an amazing example of sustainably delivering 2,00,000+ tiffins per day in Mumbai city, promoting "plastic-free" and "zero emission" deliveries. While their model which is dependent entirely on conventional cycles is self-sufficient and emission-free, the availability of modern e-bikes will help increase their efficiency. Therefore, IIFL Foundation launched this unique Project which aims to provide 25 electric bikes to Mumbai Dabbawalas, enhancing their efficiency, and income, and reducing their occupational health issues. This initiative supports sustainable mobility and promotes a pollution-free model for last-mile delivery services. As part of the project, 25 dabbawalas were selected in coordination with the Dabbawala Association, Mumbai. All 25 participants earn below Rs. 20,000 and predominantly operate along the central and harbour lines, where delivery locations are often spread far apart. The introduction of 25 e-bikes will not only facilitate sustainable transportation but also promote economic growth and health benefits for these dabbawalas, significantly contributing to reducing air pollution in Mumbai.

HIGHLIGHTS

On September 23, 2024, we celebrated the successful distribution of 25 electric bikes to Mumbai's dabbawalas in a ceremony attended by key figures including Deputy Commissioner Hon. Minesh Pimple, IIFL Foundation Founder and Director Ms. Madhu Jain, Waatavaran Foundation's Founder and CEO Mr. Bhagwan Kesbhat, and Dabbawala Association President Mr.Ulhas Muke. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency of the dabbawalas, enabling them to cover greater distances and serve more customers while reducing their environmental footprint.

As the dabbawalas begin to utilize these electric bikes, most have already started using them, with three waiting for the auspicious occasion of Dasara to commence. To ensure effective communication and support, a WhatsApp group has been established, including the dabbawalas, the Waatavaran team, and the vendor. This group will facilitate timely updates and address any potential issues with the bikes, ensuring smooth operations as the dabbawalas adapt to this innovative mode of transport.

This was made possible through the generous funding provided by IIFL Foundation. This collaboration not only enhances the dabbawalas' operational efficiency but also aligns with broader goals of promoting sustainable transportation. The support from IIFL Foundation has been instrumental in realizing this initiative, demonstrating a commitment to both community welfare and environmental sustainability. The positive impact of this project is a testament to the power of partnerships in driving meaningful change.
