Overview

IIFL Foundation, in collaboration with Gyan Shaala has initiated a curriculum development project which aims to develop and successfully implement a curriculum approach that ensures - age and level-appropriate learning with conceptual clarity for the key components of Rajasthan State Board's curriculum in Math, English, EVS and Hindi, primarily for the students of Sakhiyon Ki Baadi program. The project aims at improving learning level of children at Sakhiyon Ki Baadi centers while-

  • Ensuring that the daily learning plan is prepared keeping in mind the learning outcomes (aligned to Rajasthan State Board’s targets for the year) for each grade, the child's age and the child’s existing learning levels.
  • Introduction of structured-synchronized classroom lesson plan that ensures creation of the optimum learning environment with the right mix of-
    • teacher exposition
    • group activity/peer learning
    • self-work in worksheets completely aligned to the day’s learning
    • creating time for individualized personal attention
  • Supporting new Daksha with low experience, modest capabilities and modest motivation to be able to conduct effective classroom processes despite shortcomings through teacher guides, and bi-annual core/refresher trainings and fortnightly curriculum trainings.

Testimonials

  • "It has been an enriching experience on working on the IIFL project, particularly for designing curriculum for children at different levels in the same class".  - Sonal Mody (Academic mentor, Math).
  • "When I started working, I had doubts regarding how this project will work given teams need to coordinate across geographies and multi-grade multi-level context? So far, in Gyan Shala we used to work with children of the same standard (age) but with different abilities, even in different modules, in which even if there was not a huge difference in the ability of the children, sometimes there was difficulty in doing the work. So, “In the group of students in a class, if the children are 4 to 14 years old, they are in the same class. How will we work, how many groups will work, etc. But, based on the experience gained in the Training of Master Trainers and class visits, we have been able to arrive at solutions for the below- 1. How to form groups of children, what is the level of the children? How will the skills work in the class? 2. How to give training to trainers effectively? 3. How will children's groups change during the year? 4. Working on all these aspects, making the material and preparing the design team for that material was a challenge, but as the work progressed, discussions were held with other organizations working on MGML and based on reading their work experiences, an understanding has formed in the team". - Sejal Parikh (Academic Mentor, EVS).
  • "After engaging with multigrade multilevel activity lots of questions arose at the beginning among all design members.  After starting to think in the direction of an appropriate answer, the team and I have evolved interesting solutions. After tackling new challenges and after gaining new experiences daily, our confidence has grown. All these years of experience working with children led to the addition of a new chapter (MGML) which strengthened the appetite to try and learn new things". - Hetal Rawal (Academic Mentor for Language Development (Hindi).
