Overview

The Institute of Science, Mumbai, formerly known as the Royal Institute of Science (RIS) was established in 1920 by the Royal Charter. It is a full- fledged premier post-graduate centre for teaching and research in science. The Institute did not have a medicinal garden to support the research practices of its students. In the early days of Botany & Environmental education students don’t find the enough sources of medicinal or herbal plants easily to study in depth like P. Hd. about a particular or verities of herbal plants at the same place, institute or campus.

IIFL foundation has created Medicinal Garden consisting of 1031 Herbal Plants of 86 Varieties, for the students who are studying Environment & Botany at The Institute of Science. It is the only Institute of its kind that can boast of having a botanical garden with rare plants, inside the campus, a rare phenomenon in Mumbai. So now the students of The Institute of Science especially from Environmental & Botany department can study 86 varieties of Shrubs, Flowering, Fruiting, Herbs & Creeper plants. Total number of 1031 plants are there in the garden.

Progress

The medicinal garden is providing an opportunity to the research students to conduct the studies within their institution and now they are no more dependent on any external agency. Also, the medicinal garden is beneficial in following ways-

  • It supplies crude raw materials and fresh plant specimens essential to carry out herbal drug and natural product-related research by the graduate, postgraduate and doctoral students.
  • Currently, herbs are applied to the treatment of chronic and acute conditions and various ailments and problems such as cardiovascular disease, prostate problems, depression, inflammation, and to boost the immune system.
  • Medicinal plant gardens are appropriate tools for conservation of medicinal plants and preservation of traditional knowledge that help collaborate more local communities, academicians, students, researchers and pharmacists for generating greater conservation benefits and promote science communication.
  • Medicinal plants have recently gained importance due to the increasing acceptance of herbal healthcare practices as they serve a plethora of pharmacological effects owing to the presence of bioactive compounds.
  • It ranges from hands-on learning to plant identification and access to fresh herbs. Students will also learn about understanding plant growth, cultivation and promoting sustainability.
  • It is also a way of conserving Rare, Endangered and Threatened (RET) species of Medicinal Plants.
  • Medicinal plant gardens are integral parts of the institution to teach about the various aspects of medicinal plants in human healthcare.
