Overview

The project, a collaboration between the IIFL Foundation and REACHA under the guidance of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), Ministry of Defense, Government of India, addresses critical gaps in the skilling and upskilling of youth in Northeast India. Despite the region's burgeoning tourism industry, there remains a significant disparity in the development and opportunities available to local communities. Recognizing this, the project aims to make a groundbreaking difference by providing youth with the skills necessary to access decent livelihood opportunities.

With the Government of India's focus on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting Women-led Development, alongside the emphasis on Northeastern states' development, this initiative aligns perfectly with national priorities. By focusing on job creation, livelihood enhancement, and entrepreneurship opportunities, the project contributes to the socio-economic development of the region.

Arunachal Pradesh, known for its breathtaking natural beauty and increasing tourist influx, serves as a prime location for this endeavor. However, despite the rising demand in the tourism sector, there is a stark shortage of skilled workers. Many youths lack the necessary training and education to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the growing tourism industry. Recognizing this, the project aims to bridge this gap by providing skill development program specifically for Home Stay Host training.

What sets this project apart is its community-driven approach. Through extensive discussions and engagement with local communities, the need for a skill development program targeting Home Stay Hosts was identified as crucial for the region's socio-economic development. By empowering local youths with practical skills relevant to the tourism industry, the project addresses immediate employment needs and fosters sustainable growth and prosperity in Northeast India.

Highlight

The project has achieved significant milestones in its endeavor to uplift the Northeastern region through tourism-driven socio-economic empowerment. The first batch of 43 trainees underwent comprehensive assessments conducted by the Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council (THSC), ensuring their readiness for the hospitality sector. 100% of the students in our part time batch, and 95% of students from our full -time batch have cleared the assessment which covered technical, soft skill and practical concepts that the students have learnt over the course of learning 250 hours of customized curriculum by THSC.

Furthermore, the project facilitated three exposure visits to homestays, resulting in positive outcomes that enriched the trainees' understanding and skills in hospitality management. These visits provided hands-on experience and insights into the operational aspects of homestay management. In mobilizing over 50 trainees for the second batch, the project has successfully expanded its reach and impact. Through engaging orientations and interactive sessions, including exposure visits, the project has instilled confidence in the students, equipping them with practical skills and knowledge essential for their professional journey in the tourism industry.

Moreover, the project's approach is evident in its focus on individual skill development as well as the broader prosperity of families and communities. By empowering local youth with employable skills and fostering entrepreneurship opportunities in the tourism sector, the project contributes to the socio-economic upliftment of the region. Furthermore, the project facilitated three exposure visits to homestays, resulting in positive outcomes that enriched the trainees' understanding and skills in hospitality management. Testimonials

  • "After completing my education in hotel management at an institute in Kolkata, I began a new journey by enrolling in the IIFL Foundation Homestay Hosts Training Programme, facilitated by IIFL Foundation, NCC, and REACHA. Here in Tezu, despite the burgeoning tourist influx, the absence of proper homestay facilities posed a significant challenge. Thus, upon learning about this initiative, I was filled with happiness and excitement, recognizing it as a pathway to countless opportunities. True to my initial impressions, participating in the programme has allowed me and my fellow students to proudly showcase our rich cultures and traditions. As we delve deeper into the course, my aspirations have grown. I envision leveraging the skills acquired to establish a homestay facility either in my own village or here in Tezu, thereby creating a sustainable source of income for myself and contributing to the local tourism ecosystem. Gratitude fills my heart as I extend my sincere thanks to IIFL Foundation, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and REACHA for providing this opportunity. Their support and guidance have opened doors to personal growth and empowerment and ignited a sense of purpose in me to make a meaningful impact in my community." -Minda Aprallo.
